FRANCE BEVK’S HOMESTEAD IN ZAKOJCA
Zakojca, the birthplace of writer, journalist and politician France Bevk (1890-1970), is located in the northern slope of Kojca and above Baška grapa valley.
Bevk’s homestead was called “Pri Volarju” where the writer spent his childhood and teenage years. The homestead is now a museum. In the basement there is a small barn, on the ground floor there are a doorway and a kitchen with a hearth and the main living area with a brick stove, and also a small bedroom. The attic has been redesigned into a large exhibition space where we can see documents, books, photos which refer to the writer’s life.
France Bevk formed national awareness and faith in a better future among his fellow countrymen during the most difficult times through his work. His stories and novels often describe places and people under Kojca in his childhood and youth.
